REPORT ON TRANSLATION PROCESS WSF2008
The core competence of BABELS is the organisation of interpreters for the WSF. The procedure includes selection to meet criteria of language diversity and training of local volunteers.
There is also a translation list and procedures for getting documents translated into many languages, called TRANSTRAD.
At the IC meeting in Berlin that I attended, I committed Babels to helping with WSF2008.
This was reinforced by a call for volunteers made by Annie Cambe, Denise Rodrigues, Christine Zonzon, Bettina Becker on the Babels site in November.
What worked :
Instant proofreading of the English text written by Thiago for the newsletter. This provided a ‘clean’ template for other languages.
In terms of the more specialised side of translation of the site, things seem to have worked more smoothly than the newsletter, because better co-ordinated
What proved problematic :
Getting a regular team of people sufficiently committed to do voluntary work over a 3-month period in different languages. (problem of lack of long-term voluntary commitment, insufficient project co-ordination…)
Convincing Thiago, who already had a lot to do, to input texts into Transtrad & do the follow-up himself. The idea of getting him to do this was one of open empowerment, based on the logic of direct input & folllow-up. It didn’t happen.
As a result of this, translation was very patchy & Thiago « invented » solutions rather than setting up a regular procedure. While the idea of making it up as you go along is a part of the WSF strengths, it can also be a weakness when producing a regular newsletter where a dedicated team is better
Lack of respect of deadlines
Conclusions :
- Very insufficient & patchy translation for French, Arabic etc. Totally lacking in most other languages. English, Spanish and Portuguese were more or less OK. I feel that this is not enough in terms of inclusiveness or coverage.

A crise política do Fórum Social Mundial

The CADTM in the Global Day of Action of the WSF 2008
The CADTM as well as its international network, which is in every day struggle to ensure the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Universal Declaration of 1948, could not and neither wished to miss this major event. Hence, in a number of countries, the issues raised made by members of the international network are as under:
Belgium: In the heart of the capital of Europe at the stock exchange, symbol of the dictatorship of capital, 500 people assembled in a collective action on Saturday afternoon, i.e. January 26th, with a slogan “The stock-exchange or the Human Life”. Later, a demonstration in support of 100 illegal immigrants on hunger strike, marched towards the building where the hunger strike was on. The next Tuesday, a SLAM party organised by the Thomas Sankara Group/CADTM, on the theme “Another world is possible/Another Liege also” witnessed a gathering of more than a hundred persons.
Benin: On Friday, January 26, 2008, CADD (member of the CADTM international network) mobilized against the Beninese public debt in front of the ministry of Finance and Economy.

WORLD SOCIAL FORUM: More Words than Action
SANTIAGO, Jan 29 (TerraViva/IPS) - Unlike the massive gatherings of past years, the World Social Forum’s "Global Day of Action" Saturday did not fill avenues around the world, nor did it make headlines in any major progressive media outlet, let alone mainstream ones.

A campaign to save uncontacted tribes from extinction
Over one hundred tribes around the world choose to reject contact with outsiders. They are the most vulnerable peoples on the planet.
Many of them are living on the run, fleeing invasions of their land by colonists, loggers, oil crews and cattle ranchers. They have often seen their friends and families die at the hands of outsiders, in unreported massacres or epidemics.

Reflections on the World Social Forum and the World Economic Forum
By Kumi Naidoo, CIVICUS Secretary-General
Last week, I participated in both the World Social Forum 2008: a Global Day of Action and Mobilisation and the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. In both venues, I witnessed civil society actors raising their voices and advocating around important issues like poverty eradication, human rights and participatory governance. Whether on the streets or in the conference halls civil society made sure that its presence was felt.
There will be no Secretary-General column this week as I am still reflecting on the experiences of civil society in Davos and during the World Social Forum: Global Day of Action and Mobilisation. In next week’s edition of e-CIVICUS 374, I will take the opportunity to reflect on the current state and impact of the World Social Forum and World Economic Forum. In the meantime, we invite you to review the series of articles in this week’s e-CIVICUS 373 that provide further reflections on both events. Please send your suggestions of articles, comments and contributions by no later than Monday, 4 February 2008 to editor@civicus.org. In solidarity, Kumi Naidoo.
WEF and WSF Human rights accountability and the environment
Bringing the World Social Forum (WEF) and World Social Forum (WSF) to Davos

“Today many victims of human rights violations do not know where to claim their rights, or whom to hold accountable for their suffering”, says Ms. Souhayr Belhassen, the President of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), describing the human rights reality in many countries. In Davos, during the World Economic Forum, she urged that society must raise awareness of the growing world-wide human rights accountability gaps. On the occasion of the World Social Forum Global Day of Action 2008, the Human Dignity and Human Rights Caucus (HDHRC), a global coalition of major human rights and development organisations, Belhassen demanded that “states and corporations put an end to global human rights violations. Poor people, in particular, suffer a dramatic increase in violations of their basic human rights”. For more information, click here.
Palestinian civil society highlighting plight of refugees at World Social Forum
Source: The Daily Star in Lebanon, www.dailystar.com.lb
The World Social Forum is a worldwide network of anti-globalisation activists that holds demonstrations each year to coincide with the meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, in an attempt to overshadow the news coverage of the annual forum in the media. Several pro-Palestinian organisations stage demonstrations on Global Action Day in Occupied Jerusalem to highlight the Palestinian right of return and the 60th anniversary of the Nakba, or "catastrophe," when Palestinians were forced out of the land that became Israel in 1948. Highlighting the right of return is fundamental, said Ziad Abdel-Samad, the director of the Arab NGO Network for Development (ANND) in Beirut. Mr Abdel-Samed is also a member of CIVICUS Board of Directors. For more information, click here.
